How to Maximize Your Holiday Dining Room Space

The dining room is the home of festive dinner parties, especially during the Thanksgiving holiday.  How can you maximize your dining room space to accommodate your party needs?  Here's our interpretation of some tips from the Zillow Blog.

1. Clear Your Space

Move out the non-essential pieces in your dining room for the holiday season.  In some cases, this may mean you're only leaving your table and chairs.  Less is absolutely more during a crowded party, as more space = more comfort.

2. Set Up a Buffet

No need to stack all your food on the table.  Set up a buffet-style dining experience by serving your food in the kitchen on either a table or on the counter, letting guests arrange their own place in a spacious area.

3. Use a Bench

If you have bulky chairs that take up valuable seating space, consider using a bench along one side or on the ends of the table to accommodate an extra guest or two.  Renting a bench or a chair may be a better alternative to buying.

4.  Extend Your Table

Sometimes, even with your leaf inserted, your table just won't be long enough.  You can extend it by either adding another folding table on the end of your table, or by using a sheet of standard plywood on top.  Place a tablecloth over it, and you won't notice a difference.

5. Limit Table Decor

Festive decorations can augment a space well, but limit your actual decorations on the table itself. Your table will be well adorned with food in no time.

6. Create a Kids Table

If your guest list is looking long and your table likely to be cramped, consider placing a "kids table" in the other room.  Kids often enjoy being on their own anyway, and a kids table can help section off a dinner party and create more space in your main dining area.

7. Use Outdoor Space

If you live in a warmer climate, why not use some of your outdoor space?  Your dining table could be used for your buffet, while guests dine outside on your deck or patio.

8. Redistribute the Space

Sometimes, moving furniture around can allot for more space.  Placing a table diagonal, for example, could help extend your table space or add some room for a few more chairs.
